Approaching the New Year

The day after tomorrow, we enter a brand new year. I think most of us find ourselves a little introspective at this time of year, looking at the year that has just been and wondering what the year ahead will bring. Many of us can look back at the past 12 months and see things that didn’t go so well, either by circumstances outside of our control or through our own decisions. Hopefully we can also see good things that happened, again sometimes by chance or serendipity and sometimes through our intentions and hard work. We all hope the year ahead holds more of the good things and less of the bad.

As we step across that line that is midnight on December 31st,  let’s dwell on the bad stuff only long enough to learn what there is to learn from those things and leave the rest in 2015. When something happens to really upset the horses, they react to it and then, when it’s over, they generally do a whole body shake or blow a big exhale…their ways of letting go of that negative energy. For them, it’s over. They don’t carry it around anymore. They go back to grazing or sleeping or whatever the present moment calls for. Maybe we can model that way of being as we enter the new year; shake off the past that we can’t change and be calmly open to the present.
